Making the switch from drug store or department store beauty products to clean all-natural non-toxic skincare and beauty products is a major change. I’ve been there! Seven plus years ago as I started down the path to heal my body naturally I released just how toxic my skincare and beauty products were – it was scary actually and I had never even been aware of it before that moment.
In this blog post, I’m sharing all my tips, tricks, and secrets along with a free guide of all of my favorites when it comes to clean nontoxic skincare, make-up, and personal hygiene products to save you SOOOO much time in doing all the research yourself (like I did years ago). I’ll be covering:
- How to find those nasty hidden toxins and harmful chemicals in the ingredients lists
- How toxins and harmful chemicals can effect your hormones, weight gain, and other harmful side effects they have
- How to make your own Clean nontoxic (DIY’s) skincare & beauty products that your budget & body will thank you for
- My Free clean living eBook as a checklist or reference guide (Rome wasnt built in a day and ditching and switching 100% of your products at once wont happen either lol)
So, if you are ready to take your wellness into your own hands and start tossing out things that are harmful to your body and our environment buckle up buttercup cuz here we go!
How to find hidden toxins and other harmful chemicals in your beauty products
My personal reasons for venturing down this clean nontoxic lifestyle years ago happened after having our youngest son. Looking back now I can see the signs something in my body was just off started when I was about 14-years-old.
The signs were so small they were easy to miss back then, but after having my youngest son there was NO WAY to miss the symptoms by this point.
I will give you the short version of my story (you can go back and read my full story here if you are interested). After having my youngest son I spent 2 years going to doctor after doctor and specialist after specialist, running who knows how many different tests all in search for what was causing the laundry list of symptoms I was having.
Even after finding out, I was hypothyroid the medication did nothing to help with the symptoms though my blood work looked “normal”. I was feeling anything but “normal”.
Again, as promised this is the short version of the story. Doctors told me nothing could be done and this was something I would just have to “live with and manage” the rest of my life – on medication forever.
This was simply unacceptable to me and I refused to believe this was it.
So, I started doing my own research. Knowing that if even one person had done it before then I could too. And here we are 7 plus years later COMPLETELY healed and free of all medication.
How did I do it you ask?
Through a Clean Nontoxic Diet and Clean Nontoxic Lifestyle. And here we are, this blog exists to share the hundreds of books, and thousands (countless hours really at this point) hours of podcasts, doctors’ interviews on youtube, researching products, and companies, and farms we source our food from…..
I became and still am obsessed with researching, I fell in love with it when I started to really see – well things like what you are learning in this very blog post!
Ok.
So one of my favorite tools to find these nasty hidden toxins is to think dirty. No not “think dirty”, this is a PG blog people.
The free app that’s called Think Dirty.
This handy dandy little app was not around at the beginning of my searching for hidden toxins days. I will say OMG what a time saver!
This app has just about every skincare, make-up and beauty, personal hygiene, and even household cleaning item. It is freakin’ awesome.
BUT…..
I know I know there’s always a ‘but’ right (lol). But this app only has access to “listed ingredients”. You may or may not be aware that there are a LOT of loopholes in the US around not having to list all of the ingredients used.
Like for example companies can, and often do, claim they have a proprietary recipe. And bam just like that 100’s if not 1,000’s of nasty ingredients, and yes if it is being hidden they must be under the nasty ingredients categories and it does not have to be listed.
In the US there are 11 FDA banned ingredients in the cosmetics industry. In Europe there are over 1,300 banned ingredients!
The make-up line I use has actually banned 2,500 different ingredients from their make-up line even some that the green-washing companies claim are “good for your skin”.
Green-washing simply means companies that market their products to look healthy, natural, and organic but they aren’t. Cool trick though right (sarcasm).
Think Dirty app is an amazing tool, the best I have found, but it can only report on what it can see. P.s. if you have other apps or websites you love comment below! And thank you for sharing.
How toxins and harmful chemicals can effect your hormones, weight gain, and other harmful side effects
Can cosmetics cause hormonal imbalance?
There are new studies that have shown how cosmetics used in personal hygiene (body wash, shampoos, soaps, scented lotions, deodorants), skincare, and make-up cause changes in reproductive hormones.
I personally know so many women who have struggled to have children or had multiple miscarriages – all could be linked to VOCs or chemicals added into daily personal care products that most people never even think about!
There is growing research and evidence that pesticides, BPA, phthalates, and other toxic chemicals are major endocrine disruptors (our autoimmune system is our hormone factory if this factory is being slowed down, or stopped then our body’s other functions quickly follow).
Our endocrine system is a carefully balanced system of producing and regulating the hormones our system needs to properly function – all of these additives, dyes, artificial fragrances, and other chemicals added to our daily personal care products are blocking these receptors causing them essentially to begin breaking down.
According to one study the average American woman puts on average 515 synthetic chemicals on their skin every day without even knowing it.
The problem? (if it’s not obvious…the words chemicals say it all right?)
Up to 60% of those chemicals absorb into the skin. (source)
Let me repeat that on average a woman in America puts up to 515 synthetic chemicals on her skin and 60% or more is being absorbed into her skin!
What does this translate to in our health? A host of negative health effects ranging from allergic reactions to more severe and chronic illnesses such as breast cancer and even a host of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Our endocrine system (aka the hormone factory) is responsible for or affects every single system in our bodies from sleep to our moods and our fertility.
Ok. If you haven’t already marched into your bathroom and started raiding under your sink in search of these hidden toxins using the Think Dirty App, please.
