Estrogen Dominance is the condition of increased estrogen levels relative to progesterone levels in the body. Estrogen dominance normally results from an overproduction of estrogen by the body, changes in estrogen metabolism and excretion, or an imbalance in the estrogen to progesterone ratio.
Most commonly doctors have linked estrogen dominance to being caused by a decrease and progesterone without a subsequent decrease in estrogen.
Over 70% of women are estimated to experience estrogen dominance throughout their lifetime.
Estrogen Dominance Signs
Estrogen dominance in the body shows up as;
- builds up uterine lining
- increase in body fat
- depression, headaches, or migraines
- interference with thyroid hormone
- increase in blood clotting
- decrease in libido
- a blood sugar control
- increases the risk of endometrial cancer
- increases the risk of breast cancer
High levels of estrogen in men can cause:
- infertility
- erectile dysfunction
- a condition called gynecomastia, where the breast of a man becomes enlarged
Estrogen Dominance in men is far less common than estrogen dominance in women.
Both men’s and women’s bodies need estrogen for our healthy reproductive systems, cardiovascular health, and bone health.
Too much estrogen, or estrogen dominance, can cause women to have irregular periods and may worsen conditions that affect their overall reproductive health.
Estrogen is an important hormone that regulates our reproductive systems, especially for women. Estrogen also plays an essential role in other body systems too.
Estrogen levels rise and fall throughout our lifetime.
An increase in estrogen boosts sexual development during puberty. Along with the hormone progesterone, estrogen prepares a woman’s body for pregnancy.
Elevated estrogen levels can disrupt reproductive processes and cause unpleasant symptoms.
It is rare for one’s estrogen levels to be high because of the estrogen the body is producing. It’s more likely estrogen levels are high or off balance due to medications that one is taking.
For example, someone may have a low sex drive because of high estrogen levels, but this is most likely caused by medications such as birth control pills not the body’s natural estrogen production.

Estrogen Dominance Weight Gain
Let us quickly cover one of the biggest and most frustrating outward signs one has hormonal imbalance, hormonal weight gain.
Losing weight can be so hard. Hormonal Weight Loss can feel near impossible until we understand this one thing. Hormonal weight gain is a symptom of a bigger issue.
Though the weight feels like a massive issue we want to be rid of. I have been there. I gained over 50 pounds in my second pregnancy which just would not seem to come off.
It is not the root of the problem itself.
Thus, if one manages to get the weight off but does not fix the hormonal imbalance the weight (plus some) will come right back on.
Why?
When you pick fruit from the tree does not die, it simply produces more fruit. In order to kill the tree (which I am not advocating I love trees lol but for analogy’s sake), one must kill the roots of the tree.
Our brilliant bodies are hardwired to return our hormones to the factory settings as I like to call them. However, in today’s world, it has become harder and harder to do that can boil down to two main reasons:
- Foods
- Toxins

Hormonal Health and Weight Loss
When it comes to losing weight the first thing we must understand is food is either medicine or it is poison. The foods we are eating are either nourishing our bodies or slowly poisoning them.
In America, we eat what is called the SAD diet, or the Standard American Diet. I am not sure anyone could find a more fitting acronym for US eating habits than SAD.

Food has a massive effect on our hormones. It is vital that we are eating foods that nourish and heal our bodies and not cause even more imbalance.

Estrogen Dominance in Menopause
Estrogen Dominance occurs most often in women during menopause. That includes pre-menopause for some during menopause for others and post-menopause for most women.
Why does estrogen dominance occur for most women during menopause?
Most women find it paradoxical if our hormones are disappearing in menopause how can there possibly be estrogen dominance?
The ovaries go into retirement and stop working after the age of 52 for most women. So, you think that estrogen would go down, not up….right?
Estrogen Dominance during menopause also places a risk of cancer of all kinds of other issues after menopause too so please do not ignore these signs and symptoms.
Estrogen Dominance Symptom during menopause are:
breast tenderness, irritability, depression, craving for chocolate, weepy and emotional state, cystic acne, weight in the hips thigh, and ‘pooch’ area of the stomach (also called the hormonal belly), low libido, cancer, and endometriosis.
In fact, estrogen and overproduction are commonly listed as the source of cancer in the breast and uterus. It takes the presence of overproduction of estrogen for these cancers to develop.
So again please do not brush off these signs, see a specialist right away asking for a hormone panel and inform the doctor or specialist you feel that you may have estrogen dominance.
Estrogen Dominance Treatment
Normal weight help increase the risk of insulin resistance from metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance is a result in increase estrogen Levels by increasing aromatase activity. Insulin resistance also causes the production of inflammatory mediators which are key contributors to estrogen sensitivities.
Exercise and anti-inflammatory supplements and foods are often used as a treatment for estrogen-dominant conditions.
Stress also influences the balance of hormone levels in the body. Cortisol also known as the stress hormone is a predecessor that includes progesterone.
A high fiber diet, diets high in cruciferous vegetables, avoiding alcohol and xenoestrogens, maintaining good gut health, and proper stress management (such as yoga, or meditation) are also recommended for estrogen dominance treatment.
Conclusion
Estrogen dominance, estrogen dominance causes, signs, and symptoms are the first step and understanding proper estrogen dominance treatment.
Ultimately estrogen dominance is a form of hormonal imbalance. Most often with our hormones if one hormone is out of balance others are as well. In the case of estrogen dominance, there are normally progesterone deficiencies.
