How I Lost 50+ Pounds & Healed My Autoimmune System (my thyroid)
I was naturally (or effortlessly) thin up until I started having my babies at age 23.
That is when everything in my body started to change.
Now in hindsight, there were lots of little “warning signs” or symptoms before this that I never connected the dots on.
See our bodies are like cars. We never really look under the hood unless a “check engine” warning light comes on right?
And even then we often take the car to a mechanic and let them fix it.
Same with how we handle our bodies.
We see some weird rash, or breakouts, or something off we go to the doctors right?
The problem with Western Medicine is doctors are not trained to “heal” they are trained to treat. So they give you a prescription for some pill or cream and send you on your way.
This would be like the mechanic turning off the light, charging you, and sending you on your way. The problem is the car is not fixed, the light is just turned off.
After having my second son 10+ years ago I knew something was off. Like really OFF!
So, what did I do? What I was taught to do. I went to the doctor.
After lots of tests, the doctor told me my thyroid was off and gave me a prescription. The problem is that did not fix the problem the laundry list of symptoms I was having
- breakouts / acne (NEVER before had I experienced acne)
- ridges in my fingernails
- no energy and pretty bad mood swings
- hangry when I didn’t eat on time
- 50+ pounds of post-baby weight that WOULD NOT BUDGE
This was not all the issues but these were the main issues that the medication was simply not helping.
After about 3 months I told the doctor the medication was not working, at the 6 to 9 months on thyroid medication I went back to the doctor complaining again that the medication was not working. Both times they raised the medication and sent me on my way again.
At around 9 months I was FED UP with it.
I started seeing Endocronoligists (autoimmune specialists) with the intention that I was going to heal my thyroid.
Knowing if I healed my thyroid I would probably fix that laundry list of issues too. Especially the weight issue. Honestly, I know this is vain but losing the weight was my number one reason for wanting to heal my body.
It is hard to admit now, looking back that I could care more about the outside of my body than the inside….but I am just keeping things real with you friend.
How Hormones Are Affecting Your Weight
There are several hormones in our bodies that regulate our hunger and fullness levels telling our brain when to eat and when we have had enough. Among a whole host of other things, our hormones play one of the BIGGEST roles in determining our weight or ability to lose weight.
There are so many factors in today’s modern culture that can and often do throw our hormones out of wack.
Let’s take a look at FOOD.
A hundred years ago people ate real food. You know the kind that grows out of the ground or is raised in the fields. Instead of cooked up in labs or raised on factory farms.
Today it is estimated that over 2/3’s of the American diet is processed foods. Foods cooked up in a lab to last on the shelf at a grocery store for a year or more.
These “Frankin-Foods” (my name for foods cooked up in labs by chemists) are FILLED with chemicals our bodies were never made to be able to digest. Many of which are major endocrine disruptors.
These foods are also packed with ingredients (on purpose) to create addictions and stop that hormonal chemical from telling your brain you are full.
Why?
Simple if you eat more food they sell more food, and you come back for more! Pretty nasty trick right?
How to Reset Your Hormones
After 7+ years of research to find healing naturally for my autoimmune system getting off all thyroid medication when doctors and specialists said it was impossible AND I dropped 50+ pounds that I have kept off healing all the other issues listed above. Here is how I did it!
I focused on 2 areas in my life that I knew were affecting my hormones
- Food
- Chemicals in my personal Hygiene and household products
I tried a LOT of things before finding something that worked for my body.
When I started what is called “clean keto” which is keto with little processed foods and no dairy BAM! My body responded and it responded FAST!!
Most people don’t plan to fail they fail to plan
If you want to dive in and see success. Stick with it this time long enough to not only reach your weight loss goals but create a wellness lifestyle so you never return to the eating that got you where you never want to be again you have to have a solid plan!
You know yourself better than anyone. The plan for you is maybe different for someone else.

What the heck should I eat?

In my 7+ year journey, I have seen a lot of my friends and family who asked me, “OMG K’Lee what did you do?!?! You look amazing!”

The main reason for this always revolved around not having a plan and having no idea what they were doing.

Once I learned this strategy and created a plan to implement it in my daily life I was able to create a healthy lifestyle. Food and cravings no longer controlled me. I controlled food. This in and of itself is true freedom! I also let my husband and two sons (ages 14 &10) join me and it is amazing to have them on board and all be on the same page about food.
But it all started with me.
My husband didn’t jump on board until months later when he saw what amazing results I was getting. And honestly, IT WAS REALLY HARD being the only one! Back then I could have used a coaching program or customized meal plan to help keep me on track while I was learning and adjusting myself.
