One of the first things I do with my coaching students is to ask them to toss out the scale or at least have their bestie have it at their house (lol). We let our clothes tell us how things are going. There is no ‘my whole day is ruined’ because the number on the scale didn’t move (or maybe moved in the wrong direction).

Honestly, you could weight yourself 5 times in one day and get 5 different results. It is one of the worst and most frustrating ways to track progress!

Take sugar, for example. It’s not just a sweet treat; it’s a master of disguise, lurking in foods under numerous pseudonyms like ‘high-fructose corn syrup’ or ‘evaporated cane juice.’ This isn’t just about taste.

Sugar taps into the pleasure centers of the brain, triggering a rush of dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter. The result? A hard-to-beat addiction that keeps consumers coming back for more.

Similarly, artificial dyes and chemicals aren’t just there to make food look appetizing. They’re engineered to deliver a sensory overload, creating a synthetic experience of freshness and flavor that nature simply can’t match at the same cost.

What’s more alarming is the growing body of research suggesting these additives can contribute to a myriad of health issues, ranging from hormonal imbalances and weight gain to mood disorders like depression.

These companies aren’t just selling products; they’re peddling a carefully curated fantasy. Consider Coca-Cola’s classic cinematic commercials, where the fizz of a freshly poured soda under the dim lights of a movie theatre is nothing short of hypnotic.

This type of marketing exploits a phenomenon known in the advertising world as ‘sensory branding.’ It’s a technique that transcends traditional advertising, seeking to envelop the consumer in an experience that stimulates all the senses, creating powerful memories and associations that drive compulsive consumption.

But the true mastery of the food and diet industry lies in its dualistic strategy. On one hand, it pumps the market with products that stimulate addiction and health issues. On the other, it profits from the fallout, offering diet products and regimes to ‘solve’ the problems it has helped create.

It’s a perpetual motion machine of consumption and control, disguised under the veneer of choice and pleasure.

The paradox is as bitter as it is hidden: as we pour billions into these industries, we are often left paying with more than just our wallets – we pay with our health, and ironically, with the very happiness that their marketing campaigns promise to deliver.

Unveiling the truth behind these practices is more than an act of consumer awareness; it’s an act of self-care. Next up on our myth-busting agenda is a persistent piece of diet dogma that’s been etched into the collective conscience for far too long—the calorie-counting conundrum. The simplistic and antiquated ‘calories in versus calories out’ model has been the cornerstone of weight loss strategies for decades. Yet, if this approach was truly effective, wouldn’t we all be the sculptors of our ideal bodies by now?

It’s high time to address the elephant in the room: the calorie counting paradigm is fundamentally flawed. Picturing our bodies as simple calorie banks where we deposit foods and withdraw energy through exercise is not just reductive—it’s scientifically unsound. The belief that eating the caloric equivalent of what sustains a toddler and expecting to be brimming with vitality is, plainly put, illogical. Yet, this is the narrative that’s been sold to us.

So many diets, which hawk the idea of meticulously monitoring every morsel, rely heavily on packaged or premade ‘Frankenfoods.’ These are products that are less food and more an assemblage of compounds conjured up in a laboratory—laden with chemicals designed to keep you coming back for more. These artificial creations often taste as unnatural as their origin suggests.

I’ve witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of this calorie obsession. One of my students came to me at their wits’ end, fatigued from the relentless routine of counting calories and seeing no results. They were perpetually tired and struggled with brain fog so intense it was sabotaging their work performance. The saddest part? They were trapped in a cycle that was slowly deteriorating their health.

The transformative moment came when we pivoted from obsessing over the quantity to prioritizing the quality of foods—real foods that come from the earth, not a lab. We embraced wholesome portions suitable for an active adult, and the results were nothing short of remarkable. Not only did my students witness rapid weight loss—shedding over 45 pounds in just four months—but they regained a zest for life that they hadn’t felt in two decades.

Their newfound vitality was palpable. They engaged in activities that had once left them winded, and joyously discovered they were no longer on the precipice of diabetes. Their epiphany was profound: the answer had never been about starvation or deprivation but about understanding and nourishing their body correctly.

It’s not merely the count of calories that matters—it’s the content of those calories. Nutrient-rich foods—laden with vitamins, minerals, and fiber—impact our satiety and kickstart our metabolism far more than their calorie-laden counterparts. They send signals to our brain indicating fullness and satisfaction, far beyond what the numbers on a nutrition label can dictate.

Once we corrected the course, the numbers game took a back seat to a more sustainable and nourishing approach. My student’s journey was not about adherence to a strict diet; it was a paradigm shift to a healthier, more joyful way of life.
