Welcome to Going Back to Our Roots. Ancestral living + modern science to live our best and healthiest lives.
There was a reason our ancestors were documented to live very long lives – without medical aid. I am passionate about studies in the foods they ate and why.
But this is the 2000s and modern science in the form of biohacking has hit the scene strong with advancements that will add years to our lives, and ensure we live out our golden years vibrantly.
Why are we so passionate about ancestral living and biohacking our health?
Our Story
Ten years ago I started down this journey to find healing. After having our youngest son was born my thyroid went haywire. I can now see now how the endocrine/hormonal issues started when I was in high school.
The issues were so mild I never connected the dots. I just wanted a quick fix to get rid of the issues.
Honestly, I did not really care what the roots were. This was like cutting the weeds but never pulling out the roots.
The problems never go away and often, just as with pesky weeds, they just spread and get worse over time.
When my health problems started adding up I could frankly no longer ignore them and was forced to start paying attention. I had been working on all the issues I was having in the only way I knew how from the outside in.
Using hair masks to try to get my hair texture back to what it was supposed to be. Face masks for the breakouts, which by the way never even happened in my teenaged years.
Most of all though, my weight, gaining around eighty pounds with my pregnancy and losing only ten after my son was born I was in a panic.
Nothing I did seemed to make a difference. I was at a total loss.
By this point, I was on a high dosage of thyroid medication, and the list of things that I was suffering from was a long one. Fed up I started seeing doctors and specialists in hopes we would get to the root of all the issues.
I quickly found out that doctors and specialists are trained to “treat the issue” – not cure it. Time and time again my trips to the doctors came up empty.
After undergoing countless tests, many of which I requested based on starting to dig into my own research, the verdict was always, “I don’t know. Everything looks good just stay on the medication (for life) and you’ll be fine.”
This was simply an unacceptable answer.
There are many times in our lives when we come to a fork in the road. We can either choose to throw our hands up and surrender to our lives dealings or we have to choose the other path. The scary path of unknowns.
In my case, it was either stay on the medication and suffer from all the issues I had because the medication after all was only covering up a bigger problem.
And thus be doomed to the road of constantly increasing the dosage to keep up.
Or choose to take my health into my own hands and find a solution myself. I am sure you can guess which path I took. Amazingly taking our health into our own hands is we are not limited to learning what a university deems worthy.
Honestly, ask any doctor or specialist in the ten to twelve years of medical school how many hours they spent learning about food and how it affects our health.
If there were courses on the ways that things like artificial fragrances (VOC’s) or fluoride wreak havoc on our hormones to the point it can even change our heartbeat rhythms, Yikes burning a candle so our houses smell good can mess up our hearts… yes it can.
Or how taking something like Advil while pregnant may lead to autism in your child as a study by John Hopkins is now uncovering. Yet our doctors have little to no educational focus on these things.
It is actually mind-blowing.
One of the first steps on this journey a natural practice doctor said, “food is medicine or it is poison, it is healing and nourishing you or it is slowly killing you.” Wow. Re-read that and take a moment to let it sink in.
That is a tuff truth to swallow.
In America, it is forecasted that one out of every five people will die from one of “the big five killers” as the founder of BulletProof Dave Aspery puts it.
- Alzheimer’s
- Cancer
- Obesity
- Heart Disease
- Diabetes
If we looked at the number of deaths from any one of these a hundred years ago it would be less than half what we are seeing today. It use to take 30 years of cancer cells to develop to the point they are fatal. Now children under three are dying from it.
What has happened?
A short answer would be our food supply has changed.
Most of us never realize the dominos effect even a single food can have on our health. Or the compounding effects of eating something as ordinary as a bowl of cereal can have on our long-term health.
If our bodies were a car and all those medical issues are the bright red “check engine” light trying to warn us. The symptoms are big red flashing warning lights that something under the hood is not right.
Our taught response is to go see a doctor. The doctors taught response is to prescribe medication for the treatment of these issues.
The keynote here is the “treatment of the issues” not getting rid of or healing them – treating them.
The medications act as a bandaid, as long as we take the medication it will cover up the problem. The ‘check engine light’ gets turned off.
The caveat is the medication is a bandaid that rarely comes off.
Please do not misunderstand medication can serve us as we are healing.
However, it should never be seen as the healing tool itself, it is the go-between as we are seeking the root of the issue. The mindset that medication is what is doing the healing is like a mechanic telling someone that their oil is leaking and the solution is to just keep pouring in more oil in the engine versus fixing the leak.
The car will still function, true, but not as it should. Eventually, that leak will lead to bigger issues in the engine.
After ten plus years of research in healing my own body through clean natural whole foods, cooking from scratch. Removing chemicals from our home that was affecting all of our health. Using modern research and tools in the bio-hacking field to aid and speed up my own body healing.
I am passionate about sharing this journey with you so that you too can find wellness through food, natural remedies, and a slower more intentional lifestyle.
